A fatal crash on Interstate 64 in New Kent County, Virginia, claimed the life of a driver early Friday morning, September 4, 2026, after a commercial car hauler struck the median barrier, overturned and caught fire, according to Virginia State Police.

State police said troopers were called to the crash at approximately 1:30 a.m. on westbound I-64 near mile marker 220, close to the West Point exit. Preliminary information indicates that the commercial car hauler was traveling westbound when it collided with the concrete median barrier.

The impact caused the tractor cab to straddle the median and overturn. The cab then caught fire, while the trailer carrying other vehicles remained upright.

According to authorities, the driver was the only person inside the tractor-trailer. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. At the time of the initial investigation, officials were working to positively identify the victim and notify the driver’s next of kin.

Westbound I-64 Closed After Fatal Crash

The collision resulted in significant traffic disruptions as emergency crews responded to the vehicle fire and investigators worked at the crash scene. Westbound lanes were closed while crews dealt with the overturned tractor cab, extinguished the fire and removed the damaged commercial vehicle.

A detour was established to guide motorists around the affected section of I-64. Drivers traveling through New Kent County were advised to exercise caution and check current traffic conditions before approaching the area.

Authorities had not released additional information about the driver at the time of the initial report. Officials also had not determined whether weather, roadway conditions, a mechanical issue or another factor contributed to the crash.

The circumstances leading to the car hauler striking the median remain under investigation. Virginia State Police are expected to provide additional information as investigators continue examining the fatal collision and work to confirm the victim’s identity.

The crash highlights the serious risks associated with overnight travel on major interstate highways, particularly for commercial drivers and other motorists. For now, officials are urging drivers to remain alert and follow any traffic restrictions or detours in the area.

Further updates are expected as the investigation into the fatal I-64 crash continues.
