Robert C. “R.C.” Schmidt Jr., a prominent Milwaukee hospitality entrepreneur whose career helped shape the city’s bar, restaurant, and entertainment scene for more than five decades, has died at the age of 76.

Schmidt died on September 1, 2026, according to an announcement from his family. His passing marks the end of a remarkable career that began with a modest neighborhood bar and eventually grew into a wide-ranging hospitality business with restaurants, pubs, breweries, and entertainment venues throughout the Milwaukee area.

R.C. Schmidt Built a Milwaukee Hospitality Legacy

Schmidt entered the hospitality industry in 1974, when he was just 24 years old and opened R.C.’s Beer Garden on East North Avenue.

What began as a neighborhood establishment became a longtime Milwaukee East Side fixture. The business remained in operation for 44 years and served as the foundation for the hospitality career that would eventually make Schmidt one of the city’s best-known restaurant and tavern entrepreneurs.

During part of the early 1980s, Schmidt operated several Chuck E. Cheese franchises before returning to Milwaukee’s restaurant and tavern industry and beginning an ambitious period of expansion.

Water Street Brewery Became a Milwaukee Landmark

In 1987, Schmidt opened Water Street Brewery at a time when brewpubs were still relatively uncommon.

The establishment became an important part of Milwaukee’s developing downtown entertainment scene. Water Street Brewery later expanded to locations in Delafield, Grafton, and Oak Creek, adding to Schmidt’s growing hospitality portfolio.

Over the years, his businesses included Trinity Three Irish Pubs, The Harp Irish Pub, Louise’s Trattoria, Andrew’s Bar & Restaurant, the Historic Turner Restaurant, River House, Oakland Trattoria, SoLo Pizza, Monster Pizza, Rudy’s Mexican Restaurant, Vagabond, and Brew City Barbecue, among others.

His company also operated food and beverage businesses at major Milwaukee events, including Summerfest and the Wisconsin State Fair.

Remembered for His Commitment to Milwaukee

The variety of establishments Schmidt developed reflected his broad approach to hospitality.

Some of his businesses maintained the casual character of neighborhood taverns, while others featured elaborate designs and extensive collections celebrating Milwaukee’s long brewing tradition.

His investment also contributed to the growth of Water Street as a major nightlife and entertainment corridor.

In 2008, Milwaukee Downtown honored Schmidt as a “downtown visionary,” recognizing his investment in the city center and his contributions to Milwaukee’s hospitality industry.

Family Remembers R.C. Schmidt

Schmidt’s son, Matt Schmidt, who serves as CEO and COO of 4th Street Management, said his father measured his achievements by the people connected to his businesses rather than simply by the number of establishments he operated.

According to his family, Schmidt believed strongly in Milwaukee and placed considerable importance on caring for employees and customers.

He was also known for his willingness to perform whatever job was necessary within his businesses, reflecting the hands-on approach that remained part of his leadership style throughout his career.

For employees, customers, business partners, and members of the Milwaukee community, Schmidt became closely associated with the city’s hospitality culture.

A Lasting Milwaukee Legacy

The hospitality company Schmidt built continued to evolve as the industry changed and as leadership transitioned within the family business.

Yet the influence of his decades of work remains visible through the restaurants, pubs, entertainment venues, and hospitality businesses connected to the legacy he established.

For more than 50 years, R.C. Schmidt helped create places where people gathered to eat, drink, celebrate, socialize, and create memories. His contribution to Milwaukee’s hospitality landscape extended beyond individual businesses and became part of the broader story of the city’s entertainment and dining culture.

His death represents a significant loss for his family, employees, colleagues, friends, and the many people who encountered his businesses throughout the Milwaukee area.
